Our History

Pic WoodThe origins of the Ontario Wood Products Export Association (OWPEA) began in 2006 in response to a clear need for the development of new markets for the wood industry. After initial consultation with industry, a Steering Committee composed of representatives from federal and provincial departments, ministries, and agencies was formed to take the initial steps in establishing an export association for Ontario-based manufacturers and distributors of value-added wood products and lumber.

GGA Management Consultants (GGA) was commissioned to complete a feasibility study for the formation of such an association. Released in March of 2007, the feasibility study report identified sufficient industry support, interest, and need to merit further consideration for its establishment. Based on the findings of this study, the Steering Committee identified potential sources of funding that might be available to assist in laying the foundation for this organization.

A joint industry/government meeting on February 21, 2008 resulted in sufficient industry support and commitment to form an initial board of governors and a “core implementation team” to develop the terms of reference and take the proposal forward.

A formal legal entity is registered with the Ministry of Consumer and Corporate Affairs. The implementation team has identified and confirmed eight members of the board of directors, and initiated the recruiting process for a Managing Director.
