Ontario's Wood Industry

Ontario’s wood products industry produces a broad range of primary and secondary forest products and is one of the most important and substantial contributors to the provincial economy, in both northern and southern Ontario. The value of Ontario exports of softwood lumber along averages $1 billion annually. The wood products industry in Ontario is more than capable of supplying high quality value-added wood products for the export market.

Ontario has 53 million hectares of productive forest area, the second largest productive forest in Canada. The forest inventory reveals that Ontario forests are majority softwood (57%); the rest is mixed wood and hardwood. Of Ontario’s roughly 85 million trees, the main species are black spruce (37%), poplar (21%) and jack pine (11%). Ontario’s managed forest is 16% old growth; 20% of the forest in parks and protected areas is old growth.

In the manufactured wood products industry, Ontario had direct 32, 066 jobs reported in the Labour Force Survey, creating an average of 160 330 indirect jobs. Ontario’s forestry industry created an average of direct 50, 393 jobs and 251 695 indirect jobs. Ontario receives most of its wood product manufacturing revenue from the other wood products manufacturing subsector, which averaged revenue of $2.03 billion CAD. Ontario’s converted paper product manufacturing is
the province’s highest earner, with $4.80
billion CAD revenues.

Why invest in Ontario’s forestry industry,
or more specifically into the wood
products manufacturing industry?
According to Peter Woodbridge of
Woodbridge Associates, who authored
“Why Invest in Value-Added Today?”
(2008), Ontario will become Canada’s
leading wood producer. It’s no secret that
some other provinces have been facing
wood supply issues due to unmanaged
forests and natural disasters. Ontario’s
wood products industry produces a broad
range of primary and secondary forest
products and is one of the most important
and substantial contributors to the
provincial economy, in both northern and
southern Ontario. The value of Ontario
exports of softwood lumber alone
averages $1 billion annually. The wood
products industry in Ontario is more than
capable of supplying high quality
value-added wood products for the
export market.
